Bobi The Oldest Dog Ever

This is Bobi, The Oldest Dog Ever. He is a Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo purebred living in the small farming town of Conqueiros in Portugal. As of May 2023 Bobi is over 31 years old making him the oldest dog in the world and possibly the oldest dog ever! Officially born May 11th 1992! If we go by the age old test of 1 human year equaling 7 doggy years Bobi is at the ripe old age of 217.

Bobbi’s Lore

Bobi was born in 1992 in a small shed to a family of farmers. The family did not have the capacity to take on anymore animals so the litter was planned to be euthanized. A few days later, Bobi’s owner Costa kept seeing Bobi’s mom return to the shed. There, hidden away, was the young Bobi escaped from the death! To keep from getting in trouble Bobi’s owner, Costa and his siblings kept Bobi hidden until he was large enough to open his eyes. According to Costa:

“I confess that when they found out that we already knew, they screamed a lot and punished us, but it was worth it and for a good reason!”

Costa, living on a farm, has never chained or leashed Bobi. Costa believes that Bobi is the oldest dog because of his natural lifestyle and diet. He never even expected Bobi to live this long. I mean, who would think he’d live to over 30! Bobi only eats unseasoned human food, and spends his time roaming around the village and farm. Bobi actually just prefers human food: “He doesn’t eat processed food, I have nothing against it, quite the contrary, I even have animals – other cats at home and they eat it – but Bobi has not been habituated to it- and only eats natural food.” Costa thinks Bobi’s diet is an important fact for his longevity.

According to the Network For Animals, “Prior to Bobi, the century-old record was held by an Australian cattle dog called Bluey, who according to Guinness World Records was born in 1910 and lived to be 29 years and 5 months old.”

According to Sky News Australia, for Bobi’s 31st birthday they held a traditional Portugese birthday party with over 100 guests attending! “Bobi only eats human food which is why for his birthday it was only meat and fish.”
